Dear Parents and Carers,
Further to my recent communication regarding e-scooters, I would like to clarify our position on electric bikes (e-bikes).
While it is legal to own and ride an e-bike that meets the UK Government’s Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) regulations from the age of 14, these vehicles present a significant health and safety risk due to the hazardous nature of their lithium-ion batteries. Statutory guidelines have been issued highlighting the dangers and fire risk associated with these batteries, which have been linked to serious incidents across the UK.
For further details, please refer to the official guidance:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/battery-safety-for-e-cycle-users/batterysafety-for-e-cycle-users
Due to the significant fire risk posed by lithium-ion batteries, and in line with statutory safety guidance, we can no longer store electric bikes anywhere on the school site. Learners will not be permitted to bring e-bikes onto school premises. Any e-bike found on site will be removed and held securely until collected by a parent or carer.
This decision aligns with advice from Newport City Council and best practice for safeguarding and fire prevention in educational settings, as recommended by national safety authorities.
Thank you for your support and understanding in helping us maintain a safe environment for all.
Yours sincerely,
Julia Fitzgerald
